As I write this, I’m reflecting on the rich tradition of Lent and the 40 days of preparation that many streams of Christianity emphasize before Easter. Ash Wednesday launches the Lenten season as the focus turns to Jesus’ 40 days of fasting in the wilderness. In remembrance of Jesus’ temptation, many believers give something up for Lent: media, soft drinks, chocolate, caffeine, etc. My challenge to our church this Lenten season, instead of or in addition to giving something up…add something! Add an attentive awareness of the need for Jesus in the people around you. Add a daily prayer for those on your Faithful for Four list. Add an invitation to the celebration of Jesus’ resurrection. May we approach this Easter with the intention of adding not just something but someone to the Kingdom of God!
